Hey, hi.
You may be a bit surprised to be getting this email because:
You signed up for my newsletter forever ago and have since forgotten who I am.
You never signed up for my newsletter and are wondering why I don’t just text you funny TikToks like a normal friend.
You can’t believe I’m entering the newsletter game now, especially after you were all like, “Newsletters were over in 2018, Marina!”
You’re a cute little freak who gets surprised by emails.
Well, regardless of whether any of the above describes you, I wanted to thank you for giving this e-baby a chance. (If you don’t want to give this e-baby a chance, or feel like you’re on this exclusive list of creative geniuses by mistake, no love lost, simply unsubscribe below.)
It is my deep pleasure to introduce Nice Internet.
What is Nice Internet?
After years of struggling to cultivate a healthy relationship with the internet, I finally decided to carve out a corner for indulgent, nuanced content typically not found on the feeds.
This is a space intentionally built further away from the algorithm, the scrolls of gloom & doom (don’t worry, there will be gloom & doom here too!), and general horror show that is the social media web-o-sphere. It’s my goal to lure you away from those insipid apps if only for a few minutes, to spend some time with me…in my world.
Every time I move away from social media my life improves on every level, except for this tiny, lingering out-of-touch-lonely feeling. I’m hoping this newsletter will help cure some of that or at the very least entertain/connect with other social-media-phobes who are attempting to self-ostracize from the flawed communication tools of today.
Even if this doesn’t cure my broken relationship with the internet, it’s exciting to find this platform, this bit of digital space, that feels a little like the old internet; a place where things were weird and experimental, where anyone with access to wifi could make something great, or at the very least try.
What To Expect?
With Nice Internet, you’ll get a monthly (and if I’m feeling frisky, bi-monthly) newsletter featuring art, essays, and/or some kewl stuff from around the web. Every letter will be co-written with my dog Roz and will encourage you to learn something new, absorb some joy, or reach out to me because I’m not sure if you read before but I AM LONELY.
Your pals,
Marina + Roz
Excellent. I've been a fan for years. You are on my "Sedaris List," which is to say memoirists I've found to be just as engaging and worthwhile as David Sedaris, whom I consider to be my god and personal savior. BTW, I'm in the middle of "30 Before 30" and I found great gobs of value in your essay on the virtues of visiting nude beaches. I do implore you to strive for bi-monthly, which despite how it sounds, is twice as good as monthly.
